Jeff Goodwin of Internet Marketing Scotland talks about the power of website analytics
Search engine optimisation is no doubt a great way to increase your website traffic and increase your sales or conversions. Many people pay to optimise the top key phrases in their niche/market in order to get maximum traffic and possible sales. However, what a lot of people overlook is the vast amount of information provided by analytics tools such as google analytics, stat counter etc.
Sure optimising a keyphrase with 1000 monthly searches will yield better results than a keyphrase with 300 searches. If you’re not familiar with seo, the more searches a phrase has, generally has more competition and is harder to gain front page rankings. Thats just the norm for competitve search terms.
Proper use of analytics will show the current traffic levels from possibly hundreds of search terms, not just the search terms actively being optimised. So you can potentially increase traffic by 100%,1000% by utilising the keyword data provided by analytics.
For example: many web masters that employ seo agencies generally target the key phrases with most search. And there’s nothing wring with that. But they also miss out on potentially hundreds of visitors via “low hanging fruit keywords”.
Lets say 500 people search for “keyphrase A” every month and your webisite is ranked position 10 on Google. From that 500 searches you get 10 visits (average 2%) And lets also say that “keyword A” has low competition. With a little extra optmisation, you can gain top 3 postions in the major search engines and thus increase your traffic on that keyword.
Recent studies show that top 3 postions on search results get on average 50% of all search traffic. So 10 visits can quickly go to 20 visits or more. Could your business benefit from doubling its current traffic levels? I know ours does.
